SIU clear Niagara cops after man injured while resisting arrest

First Published:

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has cleared Niagara police officers who were involved in an incident in which a Thorold man was seriously injured during an arrest.

On March 16, police were called to a residence after a woman’s ex-boyfriend showed up at her home in violation of a release order.

Once officers arrived on scene and were noticed by the 42-year-old man, he tried to run from them and dropped from a window to the ground, three floors below.

The suspect suffered fractures in both heels and the lower bone of his right leg.

Niagara police were able to take him into custody without incident, and arranged to transport him to hospital.

Following an investigation, Ontario’s top police watchdog confirmed the responding officers were not liable.

“No officers were inside the bedroom at the time the man did what he did,” reads a statement from the SIU.

“There being palpably nothing to investigate as far as the potential criminal liability of any police officer is concerned, the file has been closed.”
