Two major arterial roads in west Hamilton will be reduced to a single lane until the winter.
The partial closure of the Cannon Street and York Boulevard corridor is part of a two-year project to rehabilitate the area’s transportation infrastructure by building new bike lanes, raised bus landings and accessible sidewalks.
In order to carry out the project, the City of Hamilton says it will be reducing part of the two roadways down to a single lane in each direction until December.
The lane reduction will begin on July 8 and last until December.
During that time, York Boulevard will be reduced to a single lane between Dundurn Street North and Caroline Street, while Cannon Street West will be reduced to a single lane between James Street North and Queen Street North.

The rehabilitation project will pause for the winter season before it resumes in the spring, with a hopeful completion date of August 2025.
“Motorists and transit customers should anticipate delays and allow extra travel time,” the city said of the closure.
Westbound HSR routes through the area will experience some detours. Bike lanes in the area will also be rerouted.
Several streets will not have access to York Boulevard during the construction, they are:
- Oxford Street;
- Ray Street North;
- Magill Street;
- Crooks Street;
- Inchbury Street; and
- Rolphs Gate.
