McMaster pauses tonsil surgeries after 2 children die amid recovery

First Published:

McMaster Children’s Hospital is pausing all of its scheduled tonsil and adenoid operations procedures after two of its patients, both of them children, died in the days that followed their surgeries.

Hamilton Health Sciences (HHS) says it is “pausing the program out of an abundance of caution.”

“One child passed away the day after their surgery, and the second child passed away nine days after their initial surgery,” HHS said in a public statement released Wednesday.

“We want to extend our deepest condolences to these families.”

At this time, it remains unclear when the children died, but the formal pause on tonsil and adenoid surgeries at the Hamilton hospital began Tuesday.

The healthcare company says there is no “apparent connection” between the two cases.

It adds that it has begun taking the necessary steps to have what it says are “subject matter experts” review its pediatric program for tonsil and adenoid surgeries.

When CHCH News contacted HHS for comment on the matter, a spokesperson for the healthcare company said no one was available for an interview.
