Hamilton police arrest man wanted for the murder of his father

First Published:

Hamilton police have arrested a 22-year-old man wanted for the first-degree murder of his 56-year-old father over the weekend.

The incident unfolded around 7:42 p.m. Saturday outside of the father’s home in Stoney Creek near Trafalgar Drive and Mud Street.

Investigators say Sukhraj Cheema-Singh was seen waiting nearby for his father to return home from a night out.

Police spokesperson Const. Indy Bharaj says the son then used a long-gun that fires arrows with compressed air to attack his father during an altercation.

Officers say a family member and neighbours witnessed the incident.

When police arrived at the scene, they found the father with serious injuries.

The father, who police identified as Kuldip Singh of Stoney Creek, died in hospital.

Following the altercation, Sukhraj fled north on Trafalgar Drive towards Mud Street in a blue 2022 Ford Escape with Quebec license plate FSC 7432 that was rented from Enterprise.

In an update Monday, Hamilton police say Sukhraj was arrested at 2:55 p.m. in the area of Dufferin Street and Eglington Avenue West in Toronto where he was driving the rental SUV.

Sukhraj is scheduled to appear in court Tuesday.

Anyone with information regarding this investigation is asked to contact Det. Lisa Chambers at 905-546-3843.

Investigators add that this isn’t the first time they’ve had to deal with a situation involving the father and son.

Sukhraj was arrested in November 2023 for mischief, possession of a BB gun for a purpose dangerous to the public peace and prowling at night.

According to court documents, Sukhraj had been at his father’s home on or around Nov. 1, 2023 and damaged some of the windows.
