The RCMP have charged a Brampton resident accused of attempting to smuggle nearly $6.5 million worth of cocaine across the Canada-U.S. border in Niagara-on-the-Lake last fall.

The Canada Border Services Agency says a commercial truck driver arrived at the Queenston-Lewiston Bridge border crossing on Sept. 26 and was subsequently ordered to undergo a secondary examination.

Border services officers then discovered 202 bricks of suspected cocaine.

CBSA officers arrested the driver, who was then transferred to the custody of the RCMP border integrity unit.

Following an investigation, the RCMP charged 35-year-old Sukhwinder Dhanju on Dec. 19 with importation of cocaine and possession for the purpose of trafficking.

Police say Dhanju has been released under strict conditions.

The accused is scheduled to appear in a St. Catharines courthouse on Feb. 2.
