A new exhibit is heading to the Art Gallery of Hamilton Wednesday that brought together scientists from McMaster University and local artists to explore the science behind a healthy start to life.

In the “Art of Creation Project”, scientists from the Hamilton university work alongside artists to help in the understanding of the vitality of investing in the health of new parents during and even before pregnancy.

The project was created through focus groups with pregnant individuals and art education where professional artists created art messages based on the biology of pregnancy health.

Those art pieces will be among those featured in an exhibition being held at the Art Gallery of Hamilton beginning Wednesday.

Seven local artists created visual art, dance and spoken-word works after time in the university’s Sloboda Lab to witness first-hand research into the “early origins of science.”

Three of these artists are McMaster alumni themselves.

Beyond the art of local artists, pieces created by pregnant people who participated in art workshops throughout their pregnancies.

The project hopes to bridge the world of science and art to make scientific messaging more accessible to the general public.

“Arts-based messaging can be used on a global scale. Everyone has communities that need to understand complex ideas in a manner that is accessible,” says project lead Professor Deborah Sloboda. “It’s going to take a long time to change culture around scientific communication, so it needs to start now.”

The Art of Creation exhibit is set to officially open at the Art Gallery of Hamilton on Wednesday.
