A Haldimand detachment Ontario Provincial Police officer was shot and killed near Hagersville today after responding to reports of a vehicle in a ditch at Indian Line and Concession 14 around 2:40 p.m on Tuesday.

OPP Commissioner Thomas Carrique said in a tweet that Const. Grzegorz Pierzchala was killed on Tuesday in the line of duty.

OPP Const. Ed Sanchuk say the two suspects, a male and female have been arrested and no other suspects are outstanding. Police identified one of the suspects as 25-year-old Randall McKenzie.

During a press conference this evening, an emotional Sanchuk added: “I’m never at a loss for words, but I’m at a loss for words tonight, we lost a family member… a police officer, and you know what, a good community member.”

The circumstances that led to the shooting are unknown at this time. Police are investigating.
