A chance to walk

Bentley Mitchell is just 3 years old and he’s surpassed a lot of milestones people never thought he would. The last one on his list is learning to walk on his own. Right now Bentley relies on a walker to get around because of his cerebral palsy.

His brain sends signals to his leg muscles, telling them to tighten, which makes his legs spasm constantly and even with his walker, they become very tired and sore. But a specialized surgery called selective dorsal rhizotomy could change that. It involves severing small fibres in the spinal cord. “Essentially what that’s doing is eliminating that his brain is sending to his muscles to tighten all the time.”

Bentley has been accepted for surgery at St. Louis Children’s Hospital in Missouri, his family is hoping to raise $100,000 to cover the procedure and follow up treatment that will hopefully allow him to do everything his brother can.
