No traveller wants their trip ruined by a bad bug or a pricey hospital bill.

One can’t anticipate everything, but there are ways to reduce your risk of getting sick on a trip.

Tropical destinations are supposed to be a haven for relaxation. But they’re also home to a host of diseases our bodies aren’t used to including like cholera, typhoid fever and Hepatitis A.

All three of these diseases are transmitted through contaminated food and water and can be prevented with vaccinations.

Vaccines aren’t foolproof though, some are only 60% effective. That’s why Dr. Abbas Adam advises to watch what you eat and drink.

“Always avoid food that has been set down for a while, also cold salads, condiments, cold sandwiches. Everything that’s served hot should be safe.”

You should also pack a first aid kit with over-the-counter medications in case you have minor diarrhea or nausea.

When in doubt, visit a doctor. Travel health insurance will cover that cost.

Adventurous travelers may want to consider evacuation insurance as well.

Before you leave you can look up medical facilities around where you’ll be staying. Knowing where to go in case something does happen can reduce the stress of getting sick or hurt at your destination.
