Canadian counter-tariffs on U.S. imported cars begin today

Canadian Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne has announced a 25 per cent counter-tariff on cars imported from the United States beginning April 9.
The decision, which was first announced last week, is a response to existing U.S. tariffs on the Canadian auto sector.
The counter-tariffs will apply to non-Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement (CUMA) assembled vehicles, as well as the non-Canadian content of CUMA-compliant vehicles.
According to a statement by the Canadian finance ministry, the counter-measures will remain in place until Donald Trump’s administration axes all tariffs against Canada.
The counter-tariffs went into effect at midnight, as confirmed by Mark Carney in a post on X.
“President Trump caused this trade crisis – and Canada is responding with purpose and with force,” the post read.
The government is expected to release an additional plan for protecting Canadian jobs and incentivizing auto-makers to move production to Canada in the coming days.
