Murder charge laid after victim of Hamilton shelter stabbing dies

Homicide detectives have taken over an investigation after a Hamilton man stabbed at the Good Shepherd last week died in hospital.
Hamilton police responded shortly after 7 p.m. on Jan. 2 to 135 Mary St., where they found a man who was stabbed in the chest.
Paramedics transported him to hospital in critical condition. He remained there on life support until Tuesday when he died of his injuries.
In an update Wednesday, investigators identified him as 47-year-old Venanzio (Vinny) Tirabassi.
“Our deepest condolences go out to Vinny’s family during this incredibly difficult time,” reads a statement from Hamilton police.

Fredeman Renderos, 53, was arrested at the scene and charged with aggravated assault. Police say his charge will be upgraded to second-degree murder.
Investigators say Tirabassi and Renderos lived in the same dorm at the homeless shelter, and there were no previously reported issues between them.
Detectives believe this was an isolated incident and are not looking for additional suspects.
Officers are expected to be in the area over the next few days to speak with residents.
Anyone with further information regarding this investigation is asked to contact Det. David Brewster at 905-546-4067.
