Deeply concerning comments from the U.S. president-elect today, as Donald Trump said that he would consider using economic pressure to force Canada to merge with the United States.

This comes as news of the prime minister’s resignation continues to send ripples across the country.

Trump has ruled out using military force to annex Canada, but the next president of the United States says he might consider using it to take Greenland or the Panama Canal.

It is the latest exchange in a series of escalating threats made by the president-elect against allies.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau are rallying against Trump’s threats to merge the two countries.

Trudeau wrote online: “There isn’t a snowball’s chance in hell that Canada would become part of the United States.”
