Public advised to say clear of Yule Road area in Jarvis: rail car leak

The OPP and Haldimand fire and emergency services are asking the public to stay away from Yule Road between Concession 9 and Concession 8, just north of Jarvis in Haldimand County.
The area in Garnet railway yard is still being attended to after a leak from a rail car tanker was spotted during an afternoon inspection on Jan. 2.
The fire department worked with rail staff and a hazmat team to pinpoint the small leak in one of the tankers.
Workers began offloading the product overnight into a new rail car, a process that requires it to be burned off.
In a press release on Thursday Haldimand County said: “The public may see a large flame and black smoke in the area; this is a normal part of the process. It is, however, a slow process and does not pose any danger to residents in the area.”
The OPP confirmed Friday morning that the offloading work is ongoing. They added that while there is no threat to public safety, the public is advised to avoid the area.
Haldimand fire and emergency serviced are also asking people to stay clear.
