Inaugural Accessibility Awards brings folks together in Hamilton

Thursday marked Hamilton’s inaugural Accessibility Awards.

The initiative, announced in July, was designed to recognize and celebrate the achievements of individuals, groups, and organizations that have improved accessibility for persons with disabilities.

“We know that disability touches a lot of folks in our city, we have a higher rate than in Ontario, and in Canada…we need to continue to do everything we can to make this city as accessible as possible,” Hamilton Mayor Andrea Horwath said at the event.

Angela Miller, who suffers from psychiatric disorders, PTSD and cardiac conditions, was among those recognized at the ceremony.

Miller started K-9 Lifelines, a company that trains service dogs for people in need.

Her own service dog, Gryffindor, is an 8-year-old golden retriever that she says has enabled her to live a normal life.

This one-day celebration facilitated the connection between these individuals and groups, and with the services that can make their everyday lives easier.
