Jim Jordan loses second vote for U.S. House speaker

U.S. Representative Jim Jordan lost the second round of balloting for House Speaker today, failing to convince his Republican detractors to support him to replace the ousted Kevin McCarthy.
Jordan lost 20 Republican votes in the first round of voting Tuesday, and lost 22 today.
His second failed vote in two days raises questions over whether he has a viable path forward as the U.S. House remains in a state of paralysis.
Without a speaker, the chamber is effectively frozen amid conflict abroad and a potential government shutdown next month.
