Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has called the strike on a hospital in Gaza City that has reportedly killed hundreds of Palestinians “horrific and absolutely unacceptable.”

The Gaza Health Ministry, which is run by Hamas, says that the airstrike on Tuesday has left at least 500 Palestinians dead. Ministry officials say the hospital was packed with the wounded and those seeking shelter.

If confirmed, this would be the deadliest Israeli airstrike in the five wars that have been fought since 2008.

The Israeli military, however, says that it had no involvement in the explosion claiming that it was the result of a misfired Palestinian rocket.

Several hospitals in Gaza City have been refuges for hundreds of Palestinians who hoped they would be spared from the bombardment after Israel ordered all residents in the city and surrounding area to evacuate to the south of Gaza.

Continued strikes on southern Gaza have killed dozens of civilians in attacks that Israel say target Hamas militants.

On his way into the House of Commons Tuesday, Justin Trudeau called the bombing of the hospital “not legal” and that the situation is “absolutely unacceptable.”

Trudeau has repeatedly said that wars have international rules that must be followed, and says Canada is working with allies to get a humanitarian corridor established so supplies can be brought into Gaza.
