Rescuers have rushed more ships and vessels to the area where a submersible disappeared on its way to the Titanic wreckage site, hoping banging sounds heard underwater could be a sign that those on board are still alive.

The U.S. Coast Guard said banging noises, in intervals were detected on Tuesday and on Wednesday in the North Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Newfoundland.

Capt. Jamie Frederick with the U.S. Coast Guard said, “…We’re searching in the area where the noises were detected, and we’ll continue to do so.”

The OceanGate submersible is about the size of a minivan on the inside and it lost contact about an hour and 45 minutes into its trip.

The five people on board paid $250,000 for the chance to see the Titanic wreckage. No one knows exactly what went wrong.

The sub likely descended over 12,000 feet or nearly 4,000 metres deep. At that pressure, the craft might have imploded. If it didn’t implode, those on board might have enough oxygen to last until Thursday.
