A snow squall warning is in effect for Niagara Region with heavy snow expected to cover Niagara Falls and Welland on Thursday.

Environment Canada says visibility will be significantly reduced due to heavy falling snow and blowing snow throughout the day and into the evening.

The region is expected to get up to 20 centimeters under the heaviest snow squalls.

A band of lake effect snow over Lake Erie will continue to affect the Fort Erie area throughout the day.

The weather agency says snow squalls cause weather conditions to vary considerably. Clear skies can change to heavy snow within just a few kilometres.

Visibility will be suddenly reduced to near zero at times in heavy snow and blowing snow.

Drivers should be prepared for snow-covered and icy roads and are being reminded to turn on their lights and maintain a safe following distance.
