Ontario’s police watchdog is investigating after a Hamilton man who was wanted on a Canada-wide warrant was fatally shot by police in Peterborough.

Billy Shea was pronounced dead in hospital after he was shot following a police pursuit late Tuesday evening.

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) says Peterborough police began following a “vehicle of interest” being driven by Shea on Highway 115 around 10:30 p.m.

The SIU says the vehicle was involved in a collision a short time later. As officers approached the car, there was an interaction between police and the 27-year-old.

The agency says one officer fired his gun, hitting Shea. He was transported to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The SIU says six investigators and three forensic investigators have been assigned to the case.

An arrest warrant had been issued for Shea last week in connection with an armed robbery at a convenience store in Hamilton’s west end.
