Transport Canada is implementing speed limits for vessels in the Gulf of St. Lawrence after a fifth whale has been found dead.

Five endangered North Atlantic right whales have now been found dead within the year.

Fisheries and Oceans Canada confirmed the body of the whale was found on the shores of the Anticosti Island near the Gulf St. Lawrence.

Transport Minister Marc Garneau says effective immediately, vessels of 20 meters or more in length are restricted to ten knots when travelling in the two designated shipping lanes north and south of Anticosti Island.

Failure to comply with the speed limits can result in a $25,000 fine.
