Home Video & Netflix Releases // May 9

With the risque romance of Fifty Shade Darker and hard hitting shootouts of Heat, this week’s home video releases are mostly tailored to the adult crowd. Netflix has a bit more variety including Edgar Wright’s Scott Pilgrim vs. the World adaptation and the debut of a new King Julien series.

Adapted from E. L. James’ second Fifty Shades novel, Darker failed to match the first film’s box office performance. The film stuck to a Valentine’s Day opening weekend, but while Fifty Shades of Grey only went up against the release of Kingsman: The Secret Service, Darker debuted alongside John Wick: Chapter 2 and The LEGO Batman Movie. There probably wasn’t a huge amount of audience cross-over between the three films, however the stiff competition denied Darker the top spot at the box office. It ended up making $144M worldwide, more than $50M less than the franchise opener. The third instalment, Fifty Shades Freed, was shot at the same time as Darker and is set for release on February 9, 2018.
