The union representing Canadian postal workers has served a notice of job action against Canada Post before the 11:59 deadline tonight. The union abruptly cancelled a news conference this morning but have since sent out a news release.

Wednesday night the Federal government appointed a special mediator in hopes of breaking the stalemate in the contract talks at Canada Post. The Federal Minister of Labour also offered a 24 hour extension of timelines in order to allow for ongoing talks. The union says Canada Post said no, forcing the union into a labour dispute. So this afternoon the union served the crown corporation with a notice of job action.

The two main sticking points include trying to hammer out an agreement on wage discrepancies between rural and urban carriers, and a proposal to change the makeup of the pension plan. In the mean time, some courier companies are seeing an increase in volume as a result of the possible work stoppage at Canada Post.
