Jillian Michaels is like the Oprah of fitness. People love her persona and her workouts. And about 60 lucky people in Toronto got to experience both Tuesday.

Detailed exercise instructions by fitness maven Jillian Michaels aren’t an oddity for anyone who owns her fitness dvd’s. But to remove the tv, and be in the same room, a participant in one of her actual classes — knowing she will see your form and judge your effort — that really gets the adrenalin pumping. This woman motivates millions to strive for more, both physically and personally. Her own motivation was locked in long ago.

“I love skinny jeans. I love hopefully bouncing my great grandchildren on my knee when i’m 95. I love the idea of walking my daughter down the aisle. So I have perspective. I’ve established a very detailed why in my life that I’ve emotionally connected to that helps push me thru the more challenging times.”

Michaels approach doesn’t follow the golden rules of weightloss. One pound a week is old school.

“There’s absolutely nothing wrong than accelerating your weight loss or your level of fitness. The question is how you go about it.”

She’s not an advocate of starving the body, dramatic cleanses or even surgeries.

“If you’re eating properly and you’re eating really clean food with a decent amount of calories but you’re losing weight thru very regimented and structured exercise under a doctor’s supervision then it is safe.”

A personal trainer for more than two decades, her profile has soared with her work on the television show, The Biggest Loser. That, Michaels says, has given her access to top fitness specialists and cutting edge research. It’s what helped her develop her 30-minute program — Bodyshred.

“We touch upon every fitness modality and we hit every muscle in the body. So somebody gets results very quickly not just with their appearance but also with their level of health and fitness.”

She doesn’t use the term cheating. and doesn’t label certain foods bad. when it comes to diet, she believe’s in balance.

“I’ll take 80% of calories a day and make them healthier choices and 20% will be the glass of wine, a piece of pizza, a piece of cheesecake. Just not pizza, cheesecake and wine all in the same meal.”

Jillian Michaels’ Bodyshred program is offered at Goodlife Fitness. She’s continuing a cross Canada tour of club locations. She’s in Burlington right now, and travelling to Ottawa and Halifax .
