Madame Bovary is a period drama directed by Sophie Barthes (Cold Souls). After its premiere at Telluride last year the film played in the Special Presentations programme at TIFF. The film stars Mia Wasikowska, Henry Lloyd-Hughes, Paul Giamatti, Ezra Miller, and Rhys Ifans.

Gustave Flaubert’s classic story of Emma Bovary, a young beauty who impulsively marries a small-town doctor to leave her father’s pig farm behind. But after being introduced to the glamorous world of high society, she soon becomes bored with her stodgy husband, and seeks prestige and excitement outside the bonds of marriage.

Director Sophie Barthes is a huge fan of the novel. ““When I read the script my heart skipped a beat – it’s one of my favourite novels. I read it when I was 14 and have read it again at different periods of my life. It’s the kind of book where every time you read it you realize how much it has changed and how you misread it the first time, especially because Emma’s such a complex character. My intention was to respect the spirit of the novel and remain faithful to the psychology of the characters while creating a modern film, which will, hopefully, appeal to a young audience and entice them to discover the book as well as bring a more mature audience to rediscover with pleasure Flaubert’s masterpiece.”

Madame Bovary is rated 14A.
