After a few weeks loaded with big home video releases, things quiet down this week.

J. C. Chandor’s retro crime drama was critically adored but could not generate any sort of awards buzz. Outside of Jessica Chastain’s Best Supporting Actress nomination at the Golden Globes, the film was blanked at the major ceremonies. Maybe it was a marketing failure or just the result of a strong crop of awards contenders, but the film is now destined to become one of those forgotten and under-rated movies people discover on DVD or streaming services. Special features include commentary from Chandor and his producing team, a two-part featurette, cast interviews, deleted scenes, and a PSA about violence.

Turkish director Nuri Bilge Ceylan’s small town character drama won the Palme d’Or and the FIPRESCI Prize at last year’s Cannes Film Festival but somehow didn’t even make it on the January shortlist of Oscar nominees in the foreign language category. Like A Most Violent Year, it’s amazing that a film can get incredible praise and yet be slighted when awards season rolls around. Not everybody can be a winner though, or even a nominee in this case.

You’re going to be seeing Ryan Reynolds a lot more in the near future, but whether it’s a full blown Reynoldsaissance (Ryanaissance? We need a ruling here) remains to be seen. After this strange yet compelling performance in Marjane Satrapi’s dark comedy, Reynolds is set to appear in a number of films: Mississippi Grind which premiered at Sundance to positive reviews and got picked up for distribution by A24 Films; Self/less, a sci-fi body-switching thriller co-starring Ben Kingsley due out this year; and of course his long gestating Deadpool feature which just started production in Vancouver. You’ll find a series of deleted scenes and short featurettes included on this disc.
