The Gunman is an action thriller directed by Pierre Morel (Taken, District 13), adapted from the novel The Prone Gunman by Jean-Patrick Manchette. The film stars Sean Penn, Idris Elba, Ray Winstone, Mark Rylance, and Javier Bardem.

The Gunman is based on the novel The Prone Gunman by Jean-Patrick Manchette and is directed by acclaimed French helmer Pierre Morel. Sean Penn stars as Jim Terrier, an ex-special forces government contractor who is betrayed by the organization he once worked for, and must go on the run in a relentless game of cat and mouse across Africa and Europe.

Morel clearly knows he’s gaining a reputation for giving middle aged actors their big action break, but he does this for a reason. “Often, action films lack deep thoughtful characters but Sean’s body of work is so interesting that casting him immediately makes the story more dense. Once actors of his stature decide to engage in this genre, like Liam Neeson in Taken, they want to do things for themselves, for real. They want to go all the way for the character, and I encourage this.”
