It seems like it’s always been the symbol of Canada, but today our flag turns just 50 years old.

Canadian politicians squabbled over the flag from about the 1890’s until 1965, the whole country was divided over the design and many people didn’t like the red stylized maple leaf that now symbolizes our country.

Liberal leader Justin Trudeau held a flag day celebration with former MPs who voted for the maple leaf when the flag was being decided. Also present was former Prime Minister Jean Chretien.

It was Lester Pearson’s Liberal government that started the great Canadian flag debate back in the 1960s, determined to find a national symbol before the centennial. but some people felt the colour on the final design looked a little too much like Liberal election signs.
