The Drop

The Drop is a crime thriller based on a short story by Dennis Lehane, directed by Michaël R. Roskam (Bullhead). Set in the moody burrow of Brooklyn, the film introduces us to Bob Saginowski, the bartender at his cousin Sal’s bar. Sal used to be a big player in the local mob scene, until a group of Chechen gangsters moved into the area and bought his bar from him to use as a “drop Bar” for their money laundering scheme. One night the bar gets robbed, launching a police investigation and putting Bob and Sal in the crosshairs of their Chechen employers. Through it all however, Bob just wants to keep his head down and take care of his new puppy. The film stars Tom Hardy, Noomi Rapace, and the late James Gandolfini in his final film role.
Lehane is known for his riveting crime screenplays for films like Gone Baby Gone, Mystic River, and Shutter Island. But the original story idea for The Drop gave him a lot of trouble out of the gate. “It was the only book I’ve ever started that kicked out on me,” he says. “I put it in a drawer and never went back to it, but I kept thinking about Bob, the puppy he rescues and the woman he meets. I think it stuck with me all this time because I was fascinated by the idea of loneliness. We almost never speak about how devastating it can be. I’m of the belief that it kills more people than cancer. So I started from the idea of one guy, Bob, who is exceptionally lonely.”
The Drop is rated 14A.
