Apple unveils new technology

(Update) It’s one the largest companies in the world — with one of the most valuable brands. But did Apple meet expectations today with its latest iPhone and new Apple watch announcement?

Here’s how investors reacted to the news.

The graph the stock had some ups and downs today. The dotted line shows where Apple shares closed Monday. As you can see, as the announcement was being made the stock reached a high of $102.69 — that was at two this afternoon. But by day’s end, the price finished five dollars lower than it started — at $97.99.

Apple did disappoint in one aspect, the live feed for this massive announcement was pretty inconsistent and you needed a Mac computer to watch it. But aside from that, Apple gave customers something they haven’t felt in a while — excitement

Apple CEO Tim Cook took the stage in the same building former CEO Steve Jobs first introduced the Macintosh computer thirty years ago.

Cook revealed two new phones, the iPhone 6 and 6+ measuring 4.7 and 5.5 inches respectively and that means a lot more pixels.

Phil Schiller, Apple Senior VP, Worldwide Marketing: “The 6 has 38% more pixels, the six plus has 185% more pixels than the 5s.”

It’s also thinner, rounded – like the original iPhone, has Wi-Fi calling, a faster processer and a longer lasting battery. But aside from that, it’s not earth shattering

Ethan Do is CEO of Over Air: “I think they finally got to a point where they caught up with the other companies.”

Those other companies already use a technology called near-field communication, something Apple is new to and launched as Apple Pay

Near-field communication or NFC will allow anyone with the right phone to buy this as fast as that.

Ethan Do: “It’s a technology predominantly known for mobile payments, where you just tap and pay.”

Apple is already boasting a roster of about 220-thousand merchants where you can use Apple Pay. And Over Air, a Canadian company, has about twelve-hundred businesses that accept NFC technology. So, is this the end of physical credit cards?

Ethan Do: “If you believe that over the next two to four years, we won’t have these cards anymore.”

But you might want to hold on the spending if you want to own one of these phones without a contract.

Nick Bontis is with the DeGroote School of Business: “The iPhone six is about 650 bucks — the six plus is about 750 bucks — that is not a cheap phone.”

Apple finally joined the wearable tech race with its Apple Watch. It will also have NFC technology, as well as a heart monitor all wrapped up in a new interface. But the small size doesn’t equate to a small price — it starts at $349 and will be available in early 2015.

We know that people will pay whatever they can to get their hands on Apple’s new toys. The manager at the Mapleview Mall location said that while they don’t have a lineup at their Apple store yet, they did announce that the iPhone 6 will be released start September 19th. So people could start lining up there pretty soon.
