The Railway Man is a war drama directed by Jonathan Teplitzky. Adapted from the bestselling autobiography of the same name, the film stars Colin Firth as Eric Lomax, a British officer dealing with his emotional baggage after being tortured at a Japanese POW camp during World War 2. With the support of his wife, played by Nicole Kidman, Lomax travels back to the site of his imprisonment to confront his former captor and try to find some closure. The film co-stars Jeremy Irvine, Stellan Skarsgard, and Hiroyuki Sanada.

The film rights to The Railway Man were purchased two years after Eric Lomax published his book, which allowed him to be an active participant throughout the adaptation process. Screenwriter Frank Cottrell Boyce describes the time Lomax visited the set: “We took care to schedule one day of shooting near Eric’s house so that he’d be able to visit the set and swank a little about being played by Colin Firth. We spent the morning at the bottom of his street but he was too tired and shivery to come out. So Colin went and had lunch with him, taking his co-star Nicole Kidman. This pepped him up enormously so he put on his bobble hat and woolly muffler and insisted on coming out to see what was going on.” Eric Lomax passed away at the age of 93 while the film was still being edited.

The Railway Man is rated 14A.
