LATEST STORIES:
CSA Nominees

The Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television announced its nominees for the fledgling Canadian Screen Awards on Monday. The awards are a result of consolidating the Gemini and Genie awards and recognize achievements in television and film.
Leading the film categories with 10 nominations is the psychological thriller Enemy, which reunited actor Jake Gyllenhaal with his Prisoners director Denis Villeneuve. Both men earned nominations: Villeneuve for Best Director and Gyllenhaal for Best Actor who plays both leads, a man obsessed with tracking down his own doppleganger, and the doppleganger himself. Enemy’s other nominations include Best Picture, Supporting Actress (Sarah Gadon), and Adapted Screenplay (Javier Gullon).
Among the submitted French-language films, Xavier Dolan’s passion project Tom at the Farm has 7 nominations including Best Picture, Director (Xavier Dolan), Supporting Actor (Pierre-Yves Cardinal) and Supporting Actress (Evelyne Brochu). In addition to directing, Dolan also wrote, produced, edited and starred in the thriller about a man who attends a funeral only to discover that nobody there knows who he is or how he’s related to the deceased.
Gabrielle, Canada’s submission for the Best Foreign Language category at this year’s Oscars, earned 6 nominations, including Best Picture. The film has a strong chance at winning the top prize as Canada’s submission to the Academy Awards has won the Canadian Best Picture award for the last three years. The coming-of-age tale of a spirited woman with William’s syndrome also earned nominations for Best Actress (Gabrielle Marion-Rivard) and Best Supporting Actor (Alexandre Landry).
