Gabrielle

Gabrielle is a French-language, coming-of-age film directed by Louise Archambault. The film follows Gabrielle, a young woman who has William’s syndrome and lives in a home for developmentally challenged adults. Having an innate gift for music, she joins a choir group offered by the home and meets fellow resident Martin (Alexandre Landry). When the two fall in love Gabrielle’s family questions whether the romance will do more harm then good. As the budding relationship becomes more intimate, Gabrielle has to fight for her independence and prove she can live on her own before her family drive the couple apart.
Gabrielle was produced by the same team as the Oscar nominated films Incendies and Monsieur Lazhar. It comes as no surprise then that the film was chosen as Canada’s entry for the Best Foreign Language Film for this year’s Oscars. It was also a runner-up for the Rogers Best Canadian Film Award at this year’s Toronto Film Critics Association gala, receiving a $5000 prize.
We talked to director Louis Archambault about being Canada’s representative at the Oscars. You can see a clip of our interview with her here. Gabrielle is rated 14A.
