Saving Mr. Banks

Saving Mr. Banks tells the story of Walt Disney’s attempts to adapt P.L. Travers’ Mary Poppins to the screen. An idea that Mrs. Travers was very much against. Tom Hanks stars as Walt Disney, with Emma Thompson as Pamela Travers, the notoriously stubborn author who resisted Disney’s attempts to adapt her books for over 20 years. A famous story in the history of Walt Disney pictures, largely because of how personally involved in the filmmaking Disney was himself. It’s also very well documented, discussions over the script between Travers and the Disney writers were all recorded.
Director John Lee Hancock has experience bringing touching true stories to the screen, he’s known for such films as The Blind Side and The Rookie. Saving Mr. Banks features a strong cast, with Jason Schwartzman and B.J. Novak portraying the song writing Sherman Brothers, along with Paul Giamati, Bradley Whitford and Colin Ferrell in supporting roles. While the ensemble cast was snubbed, Thompson received a Screen Actors Guild award nomination for her role as the prickly author.
Saving Mr. Banks gets a limited releases in select Canadian cities Dec 13 and expands nationwide on Dec. 20th.
