Out of the Furnace

Scott Cooper’s Out of the Furnace is set amid the disappearing steel industry-towns around Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. The film follows brothers Russel and Rodney Baze, played by Christian Bale and Casey Affleck. Upon his release from prison Russel is ready to restart his life, but soon discovers that his younger brother has run afoul of a violent crime ring. The film looks like a gritty story centred around a dying industry town in America’s heartland.  A very strong supporting cast is highlighted by a mean turn from the normally loveable Woody Harrelson.

This is Cooper’s second time directing a feature film.  His first, Crazy Heart earned Jeff Bridges an Academy Award, and with a strong cast and intriguing story, Cooper looks to build on his early success with this his sophomore effort.

And, if you’re wondering, that’s Phantogram’s Sarah Barthel covering Neil Young’s Heart of Gold in the trailer.
