Relief on way to typhoon-struck Philippines

Efforts are under way to send supplies to the millions of people affected by the super typhoon in the Philippines.

The Philippine military has said the official death toll is 942 after typhoon Haiyan slammed into the central Philippines early Friday morning. However, the international Red Cross has said that it is realistic to predict the death toll could rise to 10,000.

That number could change since the category five super typhoon knocked out power and made it difficult to reach several communities hit hardest by the storm. The head of the Philippine Red Cross described the situation in the central Philippines as “absolute bedlam.”

In addition to $5 million, the Canadian government will match every donation dollar for dollar. The Canadian Red Cross has said they have personnel and supplies ready to deploy if necessary.
