Canadian olympic flag-bearer waves white flag in triathlon.
Simon Whitfield’s Olympic career came to a screeching halt after the 37-year-old Canadian crashed out of the triathlon early in the bike race.
He needed stitches in his left foot after careening off his bike into a curb and metal guard-rail.
Competing in his fourth and final Games, the two-time triathlon medallist was in good position following a 1.5-kilometre swim but lost control of his bike after going over a small speed bump coming out of the transition.
Whitfield appeared to be trying to slip his bare feet into bike shoes when he veered sharply to the left and was thrown into a barrier lining the central London course.
He knocked another competitior down in the process.
After scrambling back to his bike, Whitfield pulled out of the race.
The top Canadian finisher was Oakville’s Kyle Jones in 25th place.
Victoria’s Brent McMahon was 27th.
Pre-race favourite Alistair Brownlee of Britain won gold while his brother Jonathan took the bronze medal and Spain’s Javier Gomez won the silver.
