If 2014 is the year you vow to improve your fitness level, industry experts have some advice. Adopt-a-program that lets you centre your mind and focus and include a couple of weekly workouts that ramp up your cardio.

Yoga isn’t a trend. North Americans may have been slow to adopt this centuries old practice. But now firmly embraced, the downward dog is here to stay.

Denise Pala is with The Clarity Centre in Oakville: “We definitely need and find that we need to take a time and have a space that we can calm our minds, that we can be focused. And when we’re focused that can transfer into everything else we do in our lives.”

But some devotees want to concentrate on more than the breath. They want an hour guaranteed to strengthen the body as well. At The Clarity Centre in Oakville, adding handstands to familiar postures has become a winning combination.

Denise said: “We find that there is a really big call for a balance. A balance of both mind and body at the same time.”

And though yoga, in it’s various forms, has been the heart and soul of The Clarity Centre this studio is cranking things up.

Denise says: “There’s a huge draw and call for interval training and boot camps. Workouts that are calorie burning and metabolism boosting.”

To meet the demand, they’re adding high intensity programs classes like piloxing, a mixture of pilates and boxing. TRX suspension training and interval circuts like this Tabata workout. owners say it’s not a departure from their yoga roots.

Denise says: “Instead of a departure, I think it’s a complete evolution in order to be accessible for every body that comes in. For everyone to find something at our studio, we found we needed to evolve.”

And that is the fitness recommendation for 2014. Mix it up. Diversify.

Denis says: “I think the best service that everyone can do for their bodies is to be diverse in what you do. You’ll be the healthiest you, you can be.”

Reaping the benefits of a diverse workout doesn’t have to take you out of your home. The Clarity Centre is joining other facilities and personal trainers by offering their programs online. Contact theclaritycentre.ca for information.
