Glen Eden gears up for storm

While drivers could be bracing for the cold and snowy weather, skiers and snowboarders are relishing it. Glen Eden Ski Resort opened Friday for the season. It’s the earliest the slopes have been open in five years. All thanks to the freezing temperatures.
For skiiers and snowboarders, cold weather plus a skiff of fresh snow is the perfect recipe for an early opening day.
“Couldn’t be happier to get some riding in before Christmas break.”
“It’s actually fantastic. beautiful weather out today. We’re hitting it nice and early.”
After three years of struggling with warm stretches and slushy conditions, this year’s cold snap is a welcome change.
Gene Matthews is the Director of Land Services for the Glen Eden Ski and Snowboard Centre: “This is great to see people enjoying the hill already. It’s a great sign for us at Glen Eden, it’s a great sign for the industry.”
Glen Eden fired up its snow making equipment November 20th, churning out 60 hours worth of man-made snow for opening day.
Gene says: “A lot of snowmaking, a lot of pump, a lot of water and a lot of air.” And of course, a lot of cold.
With a massive snow storm on its way, most people are getting ready to batten down the hatches, but for these guys, it just means an even better weekend on the slopes.
Cory Patten is an Instructor at Glen Eden: “All of a sudden it’s opening day and we just can’t wait to get out.”
The hill has already opened 5 of 6 chair lifts, and its Terrain Park.
“For December 13th, perfect conditions.” “It feels like just real snow, no manmade.” “This is the best I’ve seen Glen Eden all last season.”
And with a little help from mother nature on its way, skiiers and snowboarders will have another reason to hit the slopes.
Add Saturday’s expected snowfall to the strong base layer that’s already on the hill, and I’m told even warmer temperatures can’t derail the ski season. So far, it’s expected to be one of the best in years here in Ontario. And after a few patchy winters, that’s good news for Glen Eden.
