Wynne supports CPP enhancement

Ontario will push the federal government to support an expansion of the Canada Pension Plan.

Premier Kathleen Wynne and finance minister Charles Sousa met with provincial chairs from the Canadian Association of Retired Persons today. On Monday the federal government voted down an NDP motion to increase benefits.

CARP, which aims to promote the interests of Canadians aged 50 and over, are asking Wynne and her counterparts to put more pressure on the feds. Speaking after today’s meeting, Wynne says Ontario is committed to the fight for better pensions.

“Our first choice is to have the federal government enhance CPP, but if the federal government determines that is not the move they will make, we will work on a ‘made-in-Ontario’ solution. We believe this is so important. It’s an investment in people and a dynamic business climate.”

Provincial finance ministers have agreed that enhancements would have to be fully funded, have a limited effect on businesses that would have to pay higher rates, improve retirement payouts for the middle class, and protect low-income earners.
