Hamilton police are investigating after an SUV went up in flames early Tuesday morning.

Emergency crews were called to the area of Elgin St. and Mary St. shortly before 3 a.m.

Hamilton firefighters arrived to find a well-involved fire in an SUV and heavy smoke in the area.

“The fire had spread to two fences and a nearby shed,” said Assistant Deputy Fire Chief Carla MacDonald. “The exposure fires on the fences and shed were knocked down first and then the vehicle fire was knocked down.”

Fire officials say the blaze is suspected to be arson.

The scene has now been handed over to Hamilton police.

Police say the vehicle has been towed and will undergo an examination.

Damage to the SUV is estimated at roughly $5,000.
