A knife-wielding man was arrested outside Premier Doug Ford’s home Monday night, his office confirms.

“Last night, a man with a large butcher’s knife showed up at the Premier’s home while yelling threats,” said Premier Ford’s spokesperson Ivana Yelich.

Police say just before 6 p.m. a man approached a residence in the area of Kipling Ave and Eglington Ave with a weapon. He slashed multiple vehicle tires prior to approaching the home.

An OPP officer was on site at the Etobicoke house and the man was arrested. No one was injured.

44-year-old George Niras, of Toronto was arrested and charged with possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and 11 counts of mischief to property.

“The premier thanks the officer for his quick action and bravery,” Yelich said.

NDP leader Andrea Horwath tweeted the news was “horrifying” adding “everyone deserves to feel and to be safe.”

“Threatening the Premier is abhorrent, and jeopardizes the lives of everyone holding public office,” said Liberal leader Steven Del Duca in a tweet.
