A 21-year-old Welland man has been charged after his dog allegedly bit a Niagara police officer.

Niagara police say an officer was investigating a minor car crash in the area of Thorold Rd. and First Ave. in Welland around 8:20 p.m. on Tuesday.

A man and his dog, a bullmastiff mix, got out of one of the cars and the animal got loose.

Police say the dog ran at the officer and latched onto his left wrist.

The officer was treated at hospital for minor injuries.

The dog’s owner was issued fines for permitting a dog to attack a person ($360) and failing to keep a dog under control ($300).

He’s been ordered to muzzle the dog whenever outside the home.
