Ikea is recalling millions of dressers in Canada after three toddlers died as a result of them tipping over in the United States.

If not mounted to the wall the dressers are prone to tipping and if a small child tries to climb one it could end in a tragedy.

The dressers have killed three toddlers in the last two-and-a-half years and over 6 million dressers are in the homes of Canadians.

Most of products were sold under the “Malm” model name.

Ikea had warned customers to use wall mounts and included mounts with the dressers, but the third death in February prompted the recall.

The problem isn’t just Ikea dressers though. A total of six children have died after being crushed by dressers in the United States over the past few decades.

“I have to live without my beautiful daughter for the rest of my life because I didn’t want to put holes in my wall or my furniture. And the reality is that $5, $5 and fifteen minutes could have saved her life.” said Kimberly Amato, who’s daughter Meghan died last year.

Hamilton paramedics are reminding parents to be vigilant.

“From personal experience I know that when it does happen, when there’s a traumatic incident with a child, it can be devastating for all involved. That’s why prevention and awareness is key in these kinds of instances.”

Ikea’s recalled dressers manufactured after 2002 can be return for a full refund, of if they’re older, for a partial credit.

Consumers who wish to keep their dressers can stop at any Ikea to pick up a free wall mounting kit, or call Ikea and they’ll have one delivered.

Ikea says its also taking steps to make sure its dressers are more stable.

“We will only sell chest of drawers that meet the voluntary ASTM standard.”

Malm dressers are one of the best selling items in Ikea’s history.
