Research out of the U.S. shows women on the pill have an increased risk of serious eye disease.

The study says women over 40 who used any type of oral contraceptive for more than three years were twice as likely to be diagnosed with glaucoma, which can lead to blindness.

Researchers say this doesn’t mean the pill causes glaucoma. But long-term use could be a risk factor. Along with family history and existing visual problems.

Although more studies are needed, experts advise women who have taken the pill for a long period of time be screened for glaucoma, especially if they have other risk factors.
