Canada’s “two Michaels,” detained by China since December 2018, are facing separate court hearings within the week.

The Canadian Embassy in Beijing says Michael Spavor’s trial is scheduled for Friday and Michael Kovrig’s hearing is set for Monday.

“We believe these detentions are arbitrary, and remain deeply troubled by the lack of transparency surrounding these proceedings,” Foreign Affairs Minister Marc Garneau said in a statement released Wednesday evening.

The two were arrested in China in December 2018, just days after police in Vancouver arrested Chinese tech executive Meng Wanzhou.

She remains under house arrest at her Vancouver mansion as her lawyers fight her extradition.

She was arrested at the request of the United States, where she faces fraud and conspiracy charges.
