Patio season is coming early to Burlington.

City council has approved an earlier start date for its temporary patio program, with it now beginning Apr. 15.

It has also made changes to the approval process, allowing 2020’s temporary patio permit holders to be renewed this year based on last year’s approvals. Application fees are also being waived.

“As the weather gets nice again, we want to support our local businesses by turning around their patio permit applications as quickly as we can,” said Community Planning director Mark Simeoni.

“I encourage owners who are thinking about installing a patio for the spring, summer or fall season, to submit their application as soon as possible so staff can work with them to find a solution that works for everyone.”

Council also approved a streamlined zoning processes for patio tents earlier this year and will be providing an additional $5,000 to the existing grant tent permit program to reimburse costs.

Applications for the 2021 temporary patio program are being accepted until Mar. 31.
