Substance abuse while pregnant study

A startling report suggests a number of Canadian women continue very unhealthy behavior during a pregnancy.

The Canadian Centre on Substance Abuse found that 18% of pregnant women smoke. 11% drink alcohol. And 5% use drugs. The report also shows that cases of withdrawal in newborns almost quadrupled between 2003 and 2010. Experts are advising that women battling substance abuse be treated with compassion by doctors, instead of being stigmatized, since addiction is a disease.
