Blue butterflies in Niagara

While many people wish for a white Christmas, we’ve found a way to guarantee you a blue one. But it’s not a bad thing.
The Niagara Parks Butterfly Conservatory is transforming itself for the holiday season. But instead of garlands and ornaments, butterflies will be decking the halls. “Blue Morpho” butterflies to be specific. Hundreds of the breed are about to emerge from their cocoons just in time for the exhibit to open this weekend. They have a plain exterior, but in flight they show off their deep blue wings making them a favourite with visitors.
Cheryl Tyndall is a Curator with the Conservatory: “It has to be our visitors’ most favourite butterfly. It’s large, it’s flashy, the irridescent blue is spectacular. He’s rather elusive at times where he likes to sit with his wings closed and then he just takes flight and gives you that dazzling blue and black flash.”
Usually, there are about 100 “Blue Morphos” at the Conservatory. But for the special exhibit, there will be over 500.
