Crystal Night’s 75th

A sombre ceremony was held Thursday night to mark the 75th anniversary of Kristallnacht (Crystal Night).
The Adas Israel Synagogue in Hamilton held this event and the audience remembered a series of coordinated attacks against Jews throughout Nazi Germany and Austria in November 1938. The name crystal night comes from the shards of broken glass that littered the streets after Jewish-owned stores, buildings, and synagogues had their windows smashed.
Rabbi Daniel Green, Adas Israel Synagogue: “The atrocities of the Third Reich were broadcast on this event on the front pages of every major capital. The world felt outrage. However, their outrage was followed by meaningless gestures and deafening silence.”
And on the topic of media coverage of what is widely agreed to be the beginning of the holocaust, retired journalist David Halton spoke at Thursday night’s event about how the Canadian and International media failed to sound the alarm.
