Rob Ford admits to smoking crack

(Updated) It’s a media zoo at Toronto city hall, as reporters wait for mayor Rob Ford to make another announcement. Ford made the shocking revelation today that he has smoked crack cocaine about a year ago.

It’s not exactly clear what Ford will be announcing at the news conference shortly, but it’s highly likely it’s about his confession that he has smoked crack cocaine. He dropped the bombshell at Toronto city hall earlier today.

“I have smoked crack cocaine. Am I an addict, no, have I tried it, um probably in one of my drunken stupors….about a year ago. I answered your question… I’ve made mistakes. All I can do now is apologize and move on.”

Ford may have apologized but several councillors are calling for him to step aside to address his issues. Just after the mayor told reporters about his drug use, Toronto councillor Denzil Minnan-Wong announced he’s proposing a motion to get Ford to take a leave of absence.

Councillors Paula Fletcher and Jaye Robinson both have said they too want to see the mayor step aside.

The proposal is just one of two motions that will be tabled at city hall — the second would strip the mayor of his power to hire or fire the deputy mayor or any of the standing committee chairs.

Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne has weighed in on the controversy, saying she’s concerned about the city’s ability to conduct business going forward.

Legal experts said last week there’s no legal way to remove Ford from office for using drugs, unless he’s actually sent to jail for it.
